Çanakkale: A Gateway of Peace from Mythology to Modern Times

Çanakkale is a unique region that has witnessed both mythical legends and some of the fiercest battles in human history. Known as the land where the ancient Trojan War took place, it is immortalized in Homer’s Iliad. With tales of the Trojan Horse and heroic warriors, the area stands as one of the key centers of world mythology.

In the 20th century, Çanakkale became synonymous with the Gallipoli Peninsula, the site of one of World War I’s bloodiest fronts. The Battle of Gallipoli in 1915 was not just a military struggle, but a symbol of a nation’s rebirth and its unwavering belief in peace.

Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the victory at Gallipoli marked the beginning of the Turkish Republic’s foundation.

Today, despite its war-torn past, Çanakkale is remembered as a place where peace, tolerance, and friendship have taken root. Each year, visitors from around the world come to this historic city to explore the mysteries of Troy and to honor the solemn yet proud memories of Gallipoli.

The “Green” Local Government and Cultural Center Building and Its Surroundings National Architectural Project Competition was launched by the Çanakkale Municipality in 2012. The project that won first place was completed and opened for use in 2023, following the preparation of implementation plans and the initiation of construction processes.

Located adjacent to Demircioğlu Street and Atatürk Street—two of the city's main arteries—and near densely populated residential and commercial neighborhoods, the project site holds significant potential for public use. Taking into account the density of pedestrian access routes, the edges along Atatürk and Demircioğlu Streets were left open to the public, forming a new “city square” for the citizens.

The building, with a total enclosed area of 27,083 m², includes underground and lower ground levels housing service units such as an indoor parking lot, a multi-purpose hall, a wedding hall, exhibition space, and a café/shop.

The ground floor consists of the municipal council chamber, an art gallery accessible from the city square, and various municipal offices.
